Bird Migration - Home is Where the Nest is
/Saturday May 9th marked World Migratory Bird Day. As winter ends, migratory birds return to Canada to rear their young. Canada and the United States formed a joint agreement, the Migratory Bird Treaty in 1916. Canada would later implement the Migratory Bird Convention Act in 1917 to satisfy the requirements of the Treaty. This piece of legislation protects migratory birds, their eggs, and their nests from disturbance and destruction. These migratory birds can find suitable nesting areas in otherwise adverse conditions from April to August annually and being vigilant is very important to avoid harming them. Pictured is a Canada goose who was found to have nested on an active construction site recently. This scene was captured by Jordan Nakonechny , an environmental scientist with Solstice Environmental Management. Physical setbacks are visible in the photo, which adequately mitigated any disturbance to the bird’s nest.
